Buying advice

  1. 01

    Blade material

Plastic blades are tough and forgiving, and the right place to start. Fibreglass and carbon are lighter and return more energy on each kick, at a higher price.

  2. 02

    Stiffness

Softer blades suit lighter divers and long sessions; stiffer blades suit strong legs and deeper dives. When in doubt, go one step softer.

  3. 03

    Foot pocket

The pocket should be snug with a sock on and leave no gap at the heel. A pocket that pinches cramps your feet long before your legs tire.

Questions

Long fins or short fins?

Long blades move more water with each kick and save oxygen, which is why freedivers and spearfishers use them. Short fins are easier for snorkelling and travel.

How do I look after my fins?

Rinse them in fresh water after every dive, dry them in the shade and store them flat or on their side so the blades keep their shape.
